Spiritual Endurance ~ More Than Teammates
Coaches lead with enthusiasm by giving individual position instruction, as well as whole team instruction. Players play certain positions on a team so that they may function as one – in order to win! Coaches will tell you that, “There is no ‘I’ in teamwork!” When we welcome students and new teachers to our school, we say welcome to the “family.” Our soccer team, led by a great coach, calls the team “la familia.” Human beings crave a sense of belonging. It’s engrained in us to want to belong – to seek that sense of oneness which can be found in the traditional family. We seek out the oneness which we once had with our Creator. He is constantly trying to draw us back to Him. We try to fill this desire to belong with what we can see…
There is a level of comfort which comes from fitting in, or being a part of a family. If the family structure is weakened then people (moms/dads/children) begin to look for a different place to “belong.” Dads and moms will seek relationships outside of their marriage. Children who do not have a solid family structure will look for something to replace it. They will seek out consistantcy for their lives… Students look to coaches to play the role of dads who are not in the homes. Teachers fill the roles of moms and dads. In some areas, gang membership now fills the family void for many teens. Gangs become the “real family” that provides the support, structure, and even values which are missing from absentee parents. In the boarding school environment, dorm parents, coaches, and teachers fill the void that students are feeling from being so far away from their families… they crave “family-like” relationships.
The desire in our hearts to be a member of family comes from God, because He wants you to be a part of His eternal family. He wants us to seek Him, understand who we are without Him, and then chose Him. When we chose Him, we become alive in His family, “so now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family,” Eph. 2:19. A citizenship you are given, not be your own works, but by placing your trust in Him. It is a gift given to us as a result of His amazing grace.
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this: it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:8-10
God’s family is not an exclusive family – it’s for all who chose to follow him. When you follow God you become more than teammates…you become family…brothers and sisters in Christ….and for that, I am grateful!
