Homemade Rainbow Chains and Superman Capes

And they said to him, ‘Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed.’ And the priest said to them, ‘Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the Lord.’ Judges 18:5-6 (ESV)

Celebrating birthdays with kids creates sweet joy and memories.

They look forward to the special day a year ahead of time!

Recently we celebrated my daughter’s birthday.

Her passion is painting – the invitations, activities, and favors all centered around this theme.

Together we worked and created – laughing and celebrating as we enjoyed our party planning time.

In my heart I cherished each moment…

She invited a few friends…they enjoyed the afternoon.

Once everyone was gone, we settled down for the night, and the sadness set in…

A thick sadness from her heart, which came from experiencing the end of something fun and magnificent.

So her daddy and I laid in bed with her and took a look back at the journey.

God reveals Himself in rearview mirrors. Ann VosKamp

We named each gift found along the way, and we gave thanks.

The invisible started to become visible.

Birthdays are not all about the presents, but rather recognizing His presence in the moment.

Every good and perfect gift is from above. James 1:17

We were grateful for the time we spent together planning, creating, and searching for fun ideas.

We were grateful for the time spent in our favorite craft store “Hobby Lobby” and time spent together in the kitchen.

We were grateful for homemade rainbow chains and superman capes…

And that is when the joy returned…

Joy comes from experiencing God’s presence in the moment.

Whatever your journey is – it matters.

God’s word is filled with people on journeys…

  • Abraham and Sarah journeyed from the metropolis of Ur, and when God knew they were ready, He gave them a son who became a great Hebrew Patriarch.
  • Joseph journeyed from the pit, through the prison, to being Pharaoh’s right-hand man in the palace.
  • Moses journeyed with the Hebrews out of Egypt and into the wilderness for 40 years until they reached the Promised Land.
  • David journeyed for many years from when he was chosen to be the next king to the time he actually wore the crown.

Bonding occurs and lessons are found in each little journey we take within our lifetime. The journey is where growth and maturity occurs.

Whether it’s the journey of pregnancy, the journey of event/party planning, the journey of school, the journey of a job, or the journey of a job search, the journey of a temporary separation from a loved one – it matters.

A journey is walked with hope and expectation.

A journey is experienced with open eyes as you recognize God’s presence with you in the moment.

A journey is celebrated when you reach the milestone.  When you arrive, may you continue to see His presence, and may He receive the glory.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)

The journey continues today…

Many small journeys with temporary destinations compose this big journey we call life – the ultimate destination is being in the presence of Jesus Christ.
