The One True Comfort

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. 1 Cor. 10:23 (NASB)

Donuts for dinner sounds delicious, and I LOVE chocolate ice-cream covered with coconut.

My kids would be so happy if this health-nut mom would serve donuts and ice cream for dinner and dessert.  Yummy!

Each one of us craves comfort…

On cold days like today, I could drink warm coffee all day long… Maybe we will have coffee with our ice-cream dessert! Ok, just kidding…

These foods in moderation are okay, but not necessarily good for me.  They might comfort me temporarily, but they won’t edify my body or make me feel good.

For some, comfort comes from food.

For some, comfort comes from trying to please others or fit in among friends.

For some, comfort comes from finally seeing God’s plan unfold.

Since the Fall, our bodies are wired to crave – to have a desire for something MORE.

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 84:2 (NIV)

Until we recognize this craving to find comfort comes from God, it is only natural to try to fill it with things we can see such as food, friends, alcohol/drugs, perfect homes, perfect kids, perfect bodies, exercise, gossip, etc..

Anything CREATED can have a stronghold on us…a distraction from finding the One true source of comfort.

God created us to crave the Creator not the created.

Comfort alone comes from Him.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort… 1 Cor. 1:3 (ESV)

We are not alone.  The presence of the Holy Spirit comforts us in times of need…

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. John 14:26 (NASB)

Bending the knees of our hearts towards God allows for our bodies to rest in what was accomplished on the cross – once and for all.
Comfort comes from knowing He paid the price for you.  Lay to rest worry, doubt, fear, and anxiety – they were nailed to the cross.
It. was. finished.

Beautiful thoughts. Your word picture of having donuts for dinner was awesome. As a mom it is so easy to think – of course not, that isn’t good for you, but how many times have I chosen things that weren’t good for me over the things that would nourish me – body or spirit, and run with abandon as a child would just giving in to my desires without thinking of the consequences to those choices.

      Debbie,
You’re right, sometimes we choose things that are easier or that we want versus what is best for us. I’m so glad He can see the Big Picture, so that we can rest in the comfort of His love instead of the comfort of strongholds.
      God bless!

I am constantly telling my children “You need to eat food that’s good for you. Food isn’t about what tastes good, you need to eat to live…” and so on. But I don’t listen to myself! I have been setting a terrible example for my babies. I give in to my cravings, I allow them to give into their cravings even though they are not beneficial. You reminded me that we need to look to God to fill us,to be our comfort. Thank you so much 🙂 I really appreciated your post.

      Yadi,
Thank you for your comment. Yes, we do set the example for our children and help them learn how to look to Him for comfort!
      God bless,
      Mindy

Loved reading this. I agree with Debbie above…how many times I’d tell my kids of course not, but yet choose unhealthily for myself! Sheesh. I love 1 Cor 10:23 now…this study helped that verse come to life for me. 😉 I choose to find comfort in the Creator…not comfort in the created. 😉

      Jenn,
Yes, The Creator is the only place we will find comfort. All things created are temporary and we will only end up wanting more, and more, and more! In Him we find rest because – It. Is. Finished.
      Take care and God bless,
      Mindy
