Shining Outside of Ourselves…

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)

Life can be heavy some days.  As a family with two active kids, we move rapidly and crash hard.

School, gymnastics practice, lax practice, homework, housework, bills… When will I have time to do it all?  Some days we carry the world on our shoulders.

Casting eyes downward we don’t see what is going on around us, because we are so busy with what is immediately pressing into us.

Edwina Patterson once said that American families struggle with the sin of “busyness” – distractions which keep us from Christ.

Spending time with God in the morning allows for us to be filled and washed by the Word.

God fills us with the Light in order for us to be the light, but we need to take time to absorb the light so that we may SHINE brilliantly.

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Philippians 2:14-16
By spending time with Him in the morning, it allows for us to slow down and see each part of our day contains Him.
He. is. there.
He is present in the little tasks, just as much as the larger ones.
From the moment we wake up, through the time we read His Word together, to the drive to school to the practices afterwards to the responsibility of paying the bills at the end of the day.  HE. is. present.
May our pace be His pace.
Sometimes what we need is to pick our heads up, look up, slow down, and re-focus and SEE.
Take a moment to let the Light shine outside of ourselves… maybe do something for someone else?  Reach out?

Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman took time to shine outside of  himself by writing a letter to a hearing-impaired nine-year old who wears hearing aids just like him.

Even though we may feel all alone in the craziness, He is present.

Are others able to see Him through  you?

He shines His light through us so that we may color this world…
