Giving Thanks in All Things {Happy Thanksgiving!}
Where is Contentment Found?
“I would rather be what God chose to make me than the most glorious creature that I could think of; for to have been born in God’s thought, and then made by God is the dearest, grandest, and most precious thing in all thinking. This is a prayer of contentment.”―C.S. Lewis
Contentment, found in the space between remembering and hope, looks different for everyone. While not a natural heart attitude, contentment is only understood through experience.
How Do I Find Contentment?
Some people gather with family this week, and some cannot do so due to distance or other circumstances. So, how do we find contentment in whatever circumstance we find ourselves in today?
The secret to finding contentment is actively expressing gratitude. We give thanks in the good times and the hard times because an attitude of gratitude always reflects our hearts’ posture.
Giving Thanks Combats Discontentment
Take the little you have, and give thanks to God for it. The more we offer thanks, the less we will hunger or be discontent. Let us give thanks for what is not enough. Let us give thanks for what is more than enough. When we give thanks, the posture of our hearts shifts, and peace for today, or contentment for our time and space, can’t help but invade.
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” James 1:17 (NASB)
Thanksgiving Precedes the Miracle
The week of Thanksgiving ushers in the season of Christmas.
Notice – giving thanks always comes before the miracle.
When we give thanks, our hearts bow low and reach high above the chaos of what we see in this world. We give thanks because we understand God is making all things new and working everything out for my good and HIS glory.
Before Jesus performed any act, He praised God and gave thanks. Joy can’t help but overflow when gratitude lives in the heart!
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Colossians 3:17 (NASB)
As we prepare Him room, I want to say “thank you.” Thank you for partnering with me in ministry. Because of your generous support, I can train staff, create curriculum through writing and speaking, and meet student-athletes and coaches right where they are with the Gospel. Because of your partnership, I can also supply Bibles and send athletes and coaches to camp! I praise God daily for you, and this season helps me to pause and reflect on God’s goodness and faithfulness.
May we all take a moment to reflect on God’s goodness in our lives as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the King of kings. From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
With love,
Basking in His Light
