Advent Devotional: Faith-Family Tree {The Significant Stepfather}

Most young men envision getting married, finding a good job, and starting families of their own one day. In their youth, they usually don’t begin by saying, “I want to be a stepfather.”

The role of a stepfather is often under-appreciated and can be rather difficult. However, as God’s will unfolds, many children are blessed to have certain men assume this great responsibility by taking on this important position in the family.

Joseph, betrothed and, at first glance, betrayed by Mary, stepped up to the plate when the opportunity presented itself to him. When Joseph found out Mary was pregnant, he secretly planned to send her away, until he understood that His purpose was much larger than he ever could have imagined.

Today’s Scripture:

The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.” ~Luke 1:19

… “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” ~Matthew 1:20b-21

Today’s Snapshot: The Significant Step-Father

Suddenly, Joseph’s troubled heart became quiet and calm. His doubt shifted to belief. Mary was chosen to give birth to the Son of God, and since Mary was promised to him, he began to understand that they were chosen to raise the Son of God together. What an honor!

It wasn’t the direction Joseph was anticipating. However, hope soon replaced fear, and Joseph walked confidently in his God-given role. Joseph became the stepfather to the baby who brought peace and redemption to the hurting world.

The Son, whom Joseph was chosen to raise, is celebrated as the Prince of Peace and King of kings.

Family Discussion:

  • Has God ever changed your direction in life?
  • Was it easy or difficult for you to change directions?
  • What if Joseph had not been obedient to the direction God was telling him to go?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

We praise You for Your sovereignty and for Joseph’s obedient heart. By willingly following You, in spite of society’s opposition, he set an example for us all. May we spend time daily in Your Word, getting to know You, so that when a change comes, we will follow in the direction You want us to go. Tonight, may we sleep in heavenly peace as we anticipate the birth of Your Son! In the precious name of Jesus, we pray, Amen
